An Evaluation of Brachial Plexus Injury


Abstract
203 brachial plexus injuries in 179 cases were evaluated for age, sex, incidence, site of the brachial plexus injury, causes of brachial plexus injury and its degree of the severity during period of 1971, August through 1982, June.
1. Age incidence was varied from birth to 69., but frequent in 20th, 30th, and 40th decade. 2.. Male was 4 times frequent than female in incidence.
3. Right side was slightly more frequently involved than the left.
4. Most frequent causes of brachial plexus injury was traction or compression of the brachial plexus (35.1%).
Next frequent causes of brachial plexus injury was high velocity injury (30.3%).
5. Total brachial plexus lesion was most frequent (38.4%). Next frequent brachial plexus lesion was the
upper trunk of brachial plexus (24.2%).
6. The severity of brachial plexus was classified in four : mild, moderate, severe, and profound.
7. 47.3% of the brachial plexus injury was profound degree, 19.2% was mild degree, 18.7% was severe degree and moderate was in 14.8%.
